PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. -- The Treasure Island city commission voted to place their city manager on paid administrative leave Tuesday night.
The motion was brought up by Vice Mayor Tammy Vasquez, who questioned City Manager Chuck Anderson's ability to lead the city, even outside the difficulties of back-to-back hurricanes and the new Elevate Treasure Island program.
Anderson defended himself at the meeting, saying he's done his best to serve the community since stepping into the role last August.
“This community has gone through a lot in my last nine months,” he said. “And overall, there's been three storms: Debby, Helene, Milton. And there was recovery and preparations done between those hurricanes and responses and we're still recovering as a community.
“Whether we're talking about rescuing people before the storm hit to getting folks back into their house. I've remained committed the entire time.
Vasquez was adamant a change is necessary.
“Our city can't take anymore,” Vasquez said. “It just can't. We're falling apart. We are paralyzed and the only way we move forward.
“It has to stop at the top it has to start from the top down.”
The vote passed 3-2, with Mayor John Doctor voting in favor.
A resolution to terminate Anderson from the post will come up at the May 20 city commission meeting.
