DA Darcel Clark has seen the city’s criminal justice system from the inside as a judge, a prosecutor and now a D.A. She has seen the effects of the system on the people of her borough, especially in communities of color. She has a slightly different take on what needs to be done, and she talks about her fight for more mental health facilities rather than more jails. Clark believes much of the violent crime in the city stems from untreated mental health issues, and wants the city to create a safety net that could help prevent crimes from happening, or curb recidivism if defendants can get the help they need. Jamaal Bailey has called the criminal justice system “outdated” and has been fighting for “automatic discovery,” recently signed into law by Governor Cuomo, and the repeal of the so-called “Blindfold Law,” which prevented defendants from seeing the evidence against them immediately, often prompting them to take unnecessary pleas. And, you can only imagine what the pro-bono attorneys of The Legal Aid Society experience every day. Tina Luongo is here to talk about their view of fairer criminal justice, from overhauling parole to passing laws protecting the privacy of the accused.
