In the wake of tragedy and the condo collapse in Surfside, State Sen. Jason Pizzo plans to file legislation during the 2022 legislative session to increase oversight and inspections of Florida’s aging high-rises.
Right now, the state does not inspect condominium buildings after construction is complete. In fact, reports indicate there are no regulations mandated by the state.
However, two counties in Florida enacted their own regulations: Miami-Dade and Broward counties require inspections once a building reaches 40-years-old.
San Francisco and New York City require inspections every five years.
We talk to state leaders about the best solutions to prevent the same kind of tragedy we witnessed in Surfside. We also discuss solutions on how condominium associations can address safety and infrastructure concerns and how to afford costly repairs.
