For 35 years, the Food Bank for New York has been dedicated to ending hunger in the city. But a new Food Bank survey shows it's still an uphill battle. 80 percent of food pantries and soup kitchens have seen a rise in traffic over the past five years, especially now, as funding for SNAP has been cut, 54 percent of soup kitchens and pantries have reported running out of food, and 29 percent say they have had to turn people away. Margarette Purvis, president and CEO of Food Bank for New York, will talk about the numbers and about Food Bank’s big "Orange Elf" event, which asked seniors, moms and dads to write letters to Santa, and the Food Bank tried to fulfill their wishes.
