As progressive as New York State is, our voting laws have been positively draconian. Advocates have spent decades trying to change them, to give every qualified New Yorker the opportunity to vote. They finally tasted victory when voting reform bills were passed by the legislature that allowed for early voting, pre-registration for 16 and 17 year olds, “portable” registration (which means if you move anywhere in New York State, your voter registration moves with you) and one primary instead of two. Kate Doran has joined us before to talk about the League of Women Voters’ long battle to change voting laws. She says, yes, they celebrated, but then got right back to work to fix what’s still broken. Wennie Chin represents the New York Immigration Coalition, and she talks about how important these changes are to low-income and legal immigrant voters, who couldn’t afford to take time off to wait in line to vote on just one day.
