Monica has survived every form of domestic abuse, from emotional and financial abuse all the way to physical abuse. When she divorced her husband, he refused to leave their home, something all too common in abusive relationships. But when he tried to break her arm in their apartment door, while her young daughter looked on, she knew it was time to seek help. She turned to Sanctuary for Families. Monica tells her story, and talks about her journey from victim to survivor, and how she has turned the pain of her past into inspiration for women and men trying to escape abusive relationships. As a lawyer, a prosecutor and a judge, Judy Kluger has seen every manifestation of domestic abuse. She’s also seen a system transform from considering abust a family matter into something that requires the attention of everyone, especially the criminal justice system. She talks about how the system has evolved, and how it needs to continue to evolve, the importance of the Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act, which would allow judges more leeway in sentencing victims, and about the good old-fashioned order of protection.
