Being the new kid on any block is hard. When that block is the U.S. Congress, the challenges grow exponentially. For women, there has always been that little something extra. Criticisms over policy become insults about their looks, their clothes, the way they speak. It took years before a male congressman was punished, even just a bit, for years of racist remarks, supporting white supremacy. Ilhan Omar, on the other hand, has been torn apart for who she is, how she worships, how she dresses and how she looks, and there are immediate calls for her removal from committees. Our guests focus on the double-standard that has always existed in politics, and has gotten so much worse since social media became the messenger of choice.
