Can you legislate an end to hate? Chaim Deutsch is taking steps to try. His legislation, which would create a new mayoral office that would preside over hate crimes education and prevention, unanimously passed the City Council last week. A long-time fighter against hate crimes in all of the city’s communities, Deutsch talks about why he believes education and understanding may be the keys to ending hate. Robert Jackson has also battled to end hate crimes, and has worked extensively for justice for all of New York’s underserved communities, particularly the LGBTQ community. He talks about why the newly elected state legislature may be instrumental in getting anti-hate laws passed that have languished for years under the old guard.
