While becoming eligible for driver’s licenses is a big step in helping undocumented New Yorkers, that community is faced with a lot of issues, especially in the current national political climate. ICE deportations of people without criminal convictions have risen 265% in New York City in the past two years. Arrests have also soared. And the language coming out of the White House, suggesting asylum seekers and refugees should be shipped to Sanctuary Cities, has the local government on high alert. But there is progress. A judge recently ruled that ICE can no longer pick people up on city property, for one thing. And more undocumented immigrants and the people who advocate for them are learning their rights. Our guests talk about all the other issues facing undocumented immigrants in the city, what it means to be a Sanctuary City, and why that doesn’t offer as much protection as you might think.
