When Puerto Ricans began to move to New York in large numbers, they gathered in a few neighborhoods and made them their own: East Harlem, the South Bronx and the Lower East Side (which they called “Loisaida”). They changed the face of many of the city’s businesses, like the garment industry. But traditionally Puerto Rican neighborhoods are beginning to change, as gentrification spreads throughout the five boroughs. East Harlem is seeing a real attempt to build luxury housing (something no one thought would happen, with its concentration of NYCHA housing). Our guests talk about what needs to be done to protect the neighborhoods built by Puerto Ricans, to keep them affordable and allow a new generation to raise families here. And our guests talk about the future, as more Puerto Ricans come to New York to escape Maria’s destruction and second and third generations find their place in NYC.
