Across the country, gun violence has reached epidemic proportions. Here in New York City, the story is a bit more hopeful. There were 753 gun-related incidents here in 2018, and that is down from the previous year’s record low. But that doesn’t mean gun violence isn’t a problem. Even though New York City has the toughest gun laws in the country, guns are still rolling in on the “Iron Pipeline” and finding their way into the hands of kids. Jackie Rowe-Adams lost two sons to gun violence. One was shot by a 13-year old. She turned her tragedy into action, forming Harlem Mothers S.A.V.E.  She talks about her experiences, and also about the support that’s out there for the often-forgotten victims, those left behind. Eric Cumberbatch is the Commissioner of the NYC Mayor’s Office to Prevent Gun Violence, part of the Office of Criminal Justice. He talks about about the “Cure Violence” model his office is using to stem the tide of shootings, one that treats the problem like a disease that can be prevented, rather than a problem that can only be solved later.
