You cannot celebrate Pride Month without also commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion. Those three nights in late June-early July are widely credited as the start of the LGBTQ Rights Movement. Perry Brass and Karla Jay were there the night the “riots” kicked off, and they are here to share their stories, which are pretty harrowing. It started with a particularly violent raid on the Stonewall Inn, but our guests describe the years of harassment and shakedowns that led patrons, on that night, to say enough is enough. Brass and Jay also talk about their part in the Gay Liberation Front, the resistance group that grew out of Stonewall, and their reaction to NYPD Commissioner O’Neill’s apology for police actions during the raid. Is it welcome, or too little, too late? Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil is the first openly gay member of a royal family. He was inspired by Stonewall to fight for LGBTQ rights in his country, India. He’ll speak to the very recent passage of a law decriminalizing homosexuality in India, and why passing that law was easy when compared with changing hearts and minds. And he’ll talk about his outreach to the rest of the world, where homosexuality is still illegal in 70 countries. In many of them, people are stoned to death for being LGBTQ.
