Harlem Week is one of the city’s biggest and best with more than 100 special events planned. What started out as a one-day festival designed to boost the neighborhood’s profile is now a month-long celebration featuring, of course, lots of food, music and fun. But it’s also an opportunity to learn about Harlem’s history, or how to become a business owner, or knowing your rights as a tenant in a transforming neighborhood. Lloyd Williams is one of the creative minds behind Harlem Week. He talks about how and why it has grown, and why it is important to honor the past while looking to the future. Brian Benjamin and Inez Dickens represent Harlem, East, West and Central, along with Washington, Hamilton and Morningside Heights. They talk about why Harlem Week, celebrating its 45th year, matters so much to their communities.
