There is a Dominican Day Parade, a Colombian Day Parade, a Puerto Rican Day Parade, etc., so why is it so important to have one parade that covers all Hispanics? That’s a question we put to Ruben Diaz, Jr. and Maritza Davila. There are more than 22 nationalities that make up the Hispanic diaspora in New York City, and while the stories of how they arrived here are often different, their reasons for coming are similar: they are looking for a better life for themselves and their children. But often those opportunities are hard to come by. It is not easy, especially for immigrants, to navigate the educational system or the job market. They face a criminal justice system that is unfriendly, at best. Hispanic and Latino men are more likely to be incarcerated than any other group, and that, some experts say, is down to over-policing. Our guests talk about what they are doing to make the journey of these immigrant families worthwhile by creating a system that is fair for everyone.
