November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, a time not just to think about how little we know about the disease, but also to remember the million-plus unpaid caregivers in New York City. Carma Augustin, who has spent five years looking after her mother with dementia and also spent more than a decade taking care of her grandmother, shares how isolated caregivers have become and how caregiving has evolved over time. Roy Capps of Care NYC, a part of Sunnyside Community Services, shares how while doctors rightly focus their attention on the patient, it’s equally important to pay attention to caregivers, who have a high rate of burnout.
