Small Business Saturday is just days away, a time when we are all encouraged not to just think local, but to shop local. It is an initiative that was started by American Express in 2010, but has since taken on a life of its own. Business owners who take part offer perks to customers and hold special events to get that foot traffic through the door. Commissioner Gregg Bishop has long been a fan of Small Business Saturday. But is it relevant in today’s shopping world? With all the problems facing small business owners, the proliferation of online shopping with its overnight deliveries and easy return policies, is the brick and mortar ship sinking? Both guests will speak to the importance of getting customers to support local entrepreneurs, and why, while we’re seeing big stores like Barney’s (Barney’s!) closing their doors, there is still a place for small business in the city.
