Mayor De Blasio wants to eliminate the SHSATs. Schools in Brooklyn have been working to make their student bodies more diverse. But should Education Equity begin far earlier, maybe even in kindergarten? Brooklyn Councilman Mark Treyger heads up the Council’s Education Committee. But before that, he taught in the city school system, and, before that, he was a student there. He’ll talk about what has changed over the years, why the schools have seen no improvement in terms of diversity, and what the Council can do to change the way the system is run. David Jones has been an education advocate for his entire career, and he was a student at Brooklyn Tech, one of the city’s Specialized High Schools, which was 31% Black and Latino when he attended. It’s now 9% Black and Latino. They’ll talk about why dropping the SHSATs may not be the answer, but using it as only part of the admissions process, along with an expanded and free test prep program, may go a long way in giving all students opportunities to study there.
