There are public schools in New York City where 100% of the students are living below the poverty line. 114,000 public school students are homeless, and often forced to change schools because buses don’t stop at their shelter. Education Equity can look very different, depending on the student you ask. Brooklyn Councilman Mark Treyger and David Jones, President and CEO of Community Service Society of New York, continue the discussion on what needs to be done to give every New York City child a shot at a good education. And talk about what was once considered a great equalizer in the city’s education system: City University. As the quality of education in City Universities continues to improve, David Jones talks about how students from families with better incomes are choosing to attend the more respected colleges in the City University system to avoid student debt, taking up places which would once go to students who genuinely could not afford a higher education. Our guests speak to why the problem of inequity needs to be addressed from kindergarten (where some schools are already instituting standardized tests, for four-year olds) through college.
