KENTUCKY — Some Kentucky lawmakers are promising legislation in the upcoming 2022 General Assembly session that will make Gov. Andy Beshear’s executive order law in Kentucky.

State Sens. Max Wise, R-Campbellsville, and Morgan McGarvey, D-Louisville, said they are leading the push to make sure Kentucky college athletes can be compensated for their name, image and likeness (NIL).

Beshear’s executive order went into effect July 1. The 2022 legislative session starts in January when legislators plan to unveil the bill.

"Next session, we will have a bill that protects Kentucky student-athletes and...lets the athletes of Kentucky know that they will have an advantage that benefits them when they attend a university in Kentucky,” McGarvey, is the top-ranking Democrat in the GOP-led Kentucky Senate, said.

During this In Focus Kentucky segment, Wise, who is the chairman of the Senate Education Committee, shared that he believes the eventual legislation will win strong support from his fellow Senate Republicans, and in the meantime, he said Kentucky lawmakers will monitor actions by the NCAA and other states before offering the legislation.

“That gives us some time to have some really good communication with a lot of the different shareholders that are out there,” Wise said
