KENTUCKY — Daniel Jay Cameron (R) is the 51st Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He is also the first African American independently elected to statewide office in Kentucky's history and the first Republican elected to the Attorney General's office since 1948.

General Daniel Cameron wants to defend an abortion law passed in 2018 that was struck down by a circuit appeals court. The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments from his office Tuesday, October 12th at 10am.

This all stems from House Bill 454 which was passed by Kentucky’s Republican-led legislature in 2018. It would ban a procedure known as dilation and evacuation, which normally happens after the 15th week of pregnancy.

"Our Deputy Solicitor General Matt Kuhn will be arguing in support of our ability to continue to defend the laws of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. It's an issue of state sovereignty. It's a question of who has the power to determine who represents Kentucky in defense of its laws. Our general assembly has made it pretty clear that this office remains the failsafe, meaning regardless of what any other agency or department does or what the Governor's office does, this office again is the failsafe to make sure there's complete defense of Kentucky's laws all the way through the Supreme Court, if necessary," explains Cameron.

Abortion is banned in Kentucky after the 20th week of pregnancy, although there is an exception for medical emergencies.
