Election Day is Tuesday, and even though it’s a mid-term there is still a lot at stake for New Yorkers. The city’s top political job is up for grabs, with Eric Adams facing off against Curtis Sliwa, and every single City Council seat on the ballot. But early voter turnout has been less than enthusiastic.
Bronx State Senator Jamaal Bailey joins In Focus to talk about why everyone needs to see the right to vote as a privilege and a social responsibility.
He spoke especially to communities of color, where voting rights have been hard fought, where lives have been lost in the battle, and where states across the country are fighting to take those rights away.
He also talked about his pride in his own district, once one of the worst in the city when it came to voter turnout and now has gone, he says, “from worst to first."
Bailey also mentions that elections have been decided by 50 votes, so if you don’t believe your vote counts, it does.
