Adrienne Adams made history this month when she was elected the first African American Speaker in New York City Council history. The Council itself is making more history: it’s the first time women have held the majority in the chamber, and it’s the most diverse Council ever.

Adams took over leadership at a time when the city is facing a multitude of issues that need dealing with, and she joins In Focus for a one-on-one interview, covering all of those issues and more. She begins with the spike in gun violence in many New York City neighborhoods.

A stark reminder came in the murders of two New York City police officers, Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora. Adams addresses not only the rise in gun violence, but the cause, including a proliferation of guns making their way up the iron pipeline.

She says she hopes to join Mayor Eric Adams meeting with President Joe Biden, so the city might just get the federal help it needs, and she outlines her plan to bring gun crimes down.
