Brooklyn State Senator Zellnor Myrie discusses his push for the Challenging Wrongful Convictions Act.
The legislation would ensure those under 18 are able to consult with counsel prior to waiving their Miranda rights, ban deception in police interrogations, among other things.
Having served in the state Senate since 2019, he talks about the Central Park Five’s case, in particular, including police coercion, the vulnerability of juveniles during police interrogations and how the case could have been handled differently.
Senator Myrie also speaks on the many other wrongful convictions that have been overturned here in New York that haven’t garner the same amount of national attention, why New York remains one of the easiest states to be wrongfully convicted and what more needs to be done.
