As the nation observes Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Staten Island Council member Kamillah Hanks joined "In Focus" with Cheryl Wills to talk about the jump in violent crime, including sexual assault. According to the NYPD, rapes are up 26% since last month across all five boroughs.

Hanks, who is chair of the city council's public safety committee, discusses how her committee is addressing the rise in crime, if the pandemic has worsened the issue, and what she makes of Mayor Eric Adams’ plan to end gun violence.

Young people, in particular, are facing unprecedented levels of violence in city schools. Hanks explains what needs to be done to address the issue and the mental and physical toll it’s taking on the children. She also shares resources for those seeking help from sexual assault or harassment.
