Queens Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers joined Cheryl Wills on “In Focus” Sunday to discuss the recent uptick in traffic fatalities across the city.

There were at least a dozen traffic fatalities this week and at least 81 this year, an increase of 19% from last year.

Brooks-Powers discussed the hit and run in her borough on Mother’s Day that left a nurse dead and explained why she’s pushing for a bill that would establish a reward for reporting information on hit and run accidents.

The councilwoman represents District 31, including Far Rockaway, Edgemere and Rosedale.

Brooks-Powers also shared her thoughts on Mayor Eric Adams’s plan to redesign 1,000 intersections across the city, why she thinks speed cameras should be kept on 24/7 and how it will discourage more after-hours reckless driving.

According to the Department of Transportation, speeding dropped by 72% at locations with cameras that automatically ticket.

As the chair of the Council's transportation and infastructure committee, the councilwoman discussed what she has found to be riders’ main transportation concerns and why she believes bike education is imperative for our students.
