The conversation surrounding food insecurity continues with Beth Shapiro, executive director of Citymeals on Wheels, and City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams.

Lacking reliable access to affordable, healthy food is a threat to many seniors. Citymeals partners with senior centers to prepare and deliver the meals. Shapiro discusses those centers and the community-based organizations they work with. Adams explains how the city council is addressing the need for investments in emergency preparedness and creating a safety net for seniors.

For so many, Citymeals is so much more than a meal. It provides vital companionship. Shapiro discusses their friendly visiting program and the nearly 600 seniors that are matched with volunteers for social connections.

About 57% of recipients live alone and 40% rarely or never leave home. Adams explains how the City Council is supporting the Department for the Aging.
