Queens Assembly Member Catalina Cruz joins “In Focus” to discuss the buses of migrants dropped off in New York City from Texas. Cruz made history as the first former “dreamer” elected to the state assembly. She represents Queens, including Corona, Elmhurst and Jackson Heights, a district with a heavy immigration population.

New York City is home to 3.1 million immigrants, the largest number in the city’s history. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has been shipping migrants into liberal cities, like New York, to draw attention to illegal immigration. Many claimed they were misled in Texas and didn’t know they were coming to New York. Some have arrived without food, water or shelter.

Cruz discusses the growing humanitarian problem and if the city is doing enough to protect them. Abbott blames the Biden administration for open border policies, saying his border towns are overrun and overwhelmed.

Cruz explains what action needs to be taken on the federal level and the resources needed for those arriving. Cruz has also been vocal about the right to a public defender for people at risk of deportation, carrying the Access to Representation Act in the Assembly. It would provide individuals and families the right to counsel in immigration court.
