KENTUCKY — During August 2022's special legislative session, members of Kentucky's General Assembly took some swift action to support Eastern Kentucky flood recovery. Lawmakers in Frankfort voted to allocate $212,662,200 dollars of direct aid to those impacted by the disaster. About $45 million of that is set aside to repair the region’s roads, highways and bridges, as stated in the new EKSAFE law.

"Seeing is believing and it's nothing like I've ever seen. I've seen floods and damage caused by floods and I've seen damage caused by tornadoes, but never seen where it looked like they both hit on the same day, like mass destruction. The loss of bridges and roads in in the counties affected was widespread," explains Sen. Jimmy Higdon (R-Lebanon).

During this In Focus Kentucky segment, Chairman Jimmy Higdon also discusses the oversight his Senate Transportation committee provides, which includes creating funding recommendations for multiple regional projects to improve major roads and bridges in the Commonwealth.
