Kweighbaye Kotee, the founder of the Bushwick Film Festival, joins “In Focus” with a preview of what to expect.
More than 100 independent films will be featured in this year’s 15th annual Bushwick Film Festival.
Kotee started the Bushwick Film Festival after emigrating here from Liberia and noticing the lack of diversity in storytelling. She explained how her production company is committed to increasing diversity and empowering the underrepresented.
The festival had to pivot during the pandemic and shifted completely virtual. This year, it’s back to five days of live screenings and events.
There’s also a full metaverse experience equipped with film screenings, virtual meetups and web panels.
Kotee discussed the Bushwick Film Institute, which offers year-round programming including free public screenings, production workshops and career training.
She also shared her excitement about the opening red carpet reception hosted by Spectrum.
The festival runs from Nov. 1 until Nov. 7.
