Schools Chancellor David Banks joins "In Focus" at Barclays Center for I WILL GRADUATE Day.
The organization is dedicated to empowering students, families and the community by promoting the importance of graduating. More than 11,000 students took part in one of the city's largest celebrations of education on Monday.
Banks discusses the importance of the event and how the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted classrooms across the city. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as the Nation's Report Card, math and reading scores for students are down across the country due to the pandemic.
Banks explains what the Department of Education is doing to help students and how they are prioritizing high-risk students through Project Pivot. The new school safety initiative will connect about 140 organizations to schools to provide critical social and academic interventions to young New Yorkers. The goal is to build community connections, improve campus climate and drive classroom success.
Banks also discusses the roughly 6,000 migrant children who have entered the city's school system and the shortage of bilingual teachers.
