Emerald Garner, the daughter of the late Eric Garner and author of the new memoir “Finding My Voice,” joined “In Focus” to discuss social justice ahead of the midterm elections.

Her father was killed in 2014 from an illegal police chokehold after being accused of selling illegal cigarettes. In 2018, the Justice Department announced it would not press charges against officer Daniel Pantaleo.

Garner discussed what life was like before the tragic killing of her father and how it changed her.

Since then, she has become determined to take a stand against police violence and released a new memoir titled “Finding My Voice,” which recounts the pain that followed her father’s killing. She explained if she feels racial justice has been lost in the national conversation ahead of Election Day.

In 2021, Congress introduced the Eric Garner Excessive Force Prevention Act to prohibit punishments or penalties based on an individual’s alien status, color or race. It would modify the criminal, civil rights statute that prohibits deprivation of rights under the color of law.

Garner explained where it stands today, and what she’s hoping comes out of this election cycle.
