KENTUCKY — LGBTQ Pride Month is dedicated to the celebration and commemoration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender pride. The awareness month started after the Stonewall riots, also called the Stonewall Uprising. That’s when police raided the Stonewall Inn, in June of 1969, which was a gay club located in Greenwich Village in New York City. As a result of the raid, there was a riot among bar patrons and neighborhood residents as police hauled employees and patrons out of the bar, leading to six days of protests and clashes with law enforcement.

Many say the Stonewall Riots of 1969, is what helped sparked the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world.

Here at home in Kentucky, From Paducah to Pikeville and everywhere in between, many communities across our state participated in activities and events that raised awareness for LGBTQ related causes.

During this In Focus Kentucky segment, we look back at how some Kentuckians celebrated Pride month 2023.
