Hip-hop historian Fred “Bugsy” Buggs joined “In Focus” host Cheryl Wills to explain the genre’s come up.
Buggs discussed the start of his career and how hip-hop was created 50 years ago but didn’t get big as a genre until a few years later because of disco.
He also mentioned how many radio DJs didn’t want to play hip-hop because of the lyrics and meaning behind the music.
Buggs was one of the first few to bump up artists like Run DMC, Sugar Hill Gang, Big Daddy Kane and more on the radio that help project their careers.
He also talked about the impact of rappers like Jay-Z, Tupac and Biggie.
