KENTUCKY — Dan Bayens, Co-Founder of Medium Buying and Republican media consultant for Content Creative Media joins this In Focus Kentucky segment to weigh-in on some factors that have led 2023’s race for governor of Kentucky becoming the most expensive race in Kentucky history.

According to the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance, close to $65 million will be spent in Kentucky’s 2023 general election by the campaigns of incumbent Gov. Andy Beshear, his Republican challenger and Attorney General Daniel Cameron, plus multiple political action committees (PACs) contributing dollars to support both candidates on TV/radio/digital campaign advertising.

“We’ve just seen a huge amount of spending come in to the US political system. The second thing I point out is, you know, people’s media consumption habits. Media has become incredibly fragmented. And so you have to be in a lot of different places and instead of spending less money to reach more people, you have to spend more money to reach less people. And that definitely factors into the third thing, is just the intense focus on like you said, to Kentucky governor’s race, there’s only two other states that are having gubernatorial elections, Louisiana and Mississippi. Republican Republicans feel like this is a great opportunity to pick up a seat. This is a Democratic incumbent and Republicans feel like they should have the opportunity to knock off,” said Bayens.
