KENTUCKY — April is Parkinson's Awareness Month, a time to come together to raise awareness and advance research toward a cure for Parkinson's disease.

According to the Parkinson's Foundation, Parkinson's disease affects an estimated 10 million people worldwide, with nearly 1 million people in the U.S. living with the condition.

While there's no cure, medications, lifestyle changes, exercise, and in some cases, surgery can help manage symptoms.

During this "In Focus Kentucky" segment, Fred Odago, neurologist with CHI St. Joseph Health Lexington, explained more on what Parkinson's disease is, some symptoms and if there any available treatments for it.

"Some patients report difficulty with movement because of rigidity," Odago said. "We also have patients reporting significant gait issues, meaning balance problems; they're having falls because Parkinson's is a deficiency in what is called dopamine. Dopamine is what is called a neurotransmitter; it allows for fluidity of movements so patients who lack this critical neurotransmitter will develop this symptom that I just mentioned."
