Mike Kallmeyer spoke with Rep. Jeff LaRe, R-Violet Township, and Rep. D.J. Swearingen, R-Huron to talk about a Joint House Resolution they co-sponsored to get bail reform onto the November ballot. An Ohio Supreme Court decision that prohibits judges from considering public safety when setting bail sparked the resolution.

“Effectively what our resolution does is restore that authority to local judges to allow them to have that discretion once again, to consider public safety and severity of the crime when setting cash bail amounts,” Rep. Swearingen said.

“It just comes down to public safety, safety for our communities, our families,” Rep. LaRe added.

If passed in November, the resolution would change the Ohio Constitution and once again give judges the ability to consider public safety when deciding to set bail.
