There were once about 1 million Black farmers across the United States. That was in 1920. But according to the Department of Agriculture, that number is now down to less than 50,000.

The dropoff is similar here in North Carolina. There are now efforts to reverse that decline, but the Black farmers who remain say they face challenges every day.
