This weekend on In Focus, we open a conversation on traffic safety in upstate New York communities. JoDee Kenney sat down with Albany Common Council Member Owusu Anane to talk about the city’s recent move to lower the speed limit in most areas from 30 to 25 mph. While pedestrian crash fatalities have dropped overall, statewide, Anane said Albany has seen an uptick and this measure is meant to educate and to save lives. Anane said the city streets are not only for cars, touting the success of the “complete streets” improvements on Madison Avenue, involving a “road diet” and established bicycle lanes. The council member also talked about the opportunity to improve traffic safety in Downtown Albany as planning for a redesigned I-787 corridor reconnecting the city to its waterfront is underway.
