KENTUCKY — At the end of 2022, The Association for Teaching Black History in Kentucky was established to work with Kentucky’ public schools to help ensure that the many social, historical and cultural contributions of Black Kentuckians are not forgotten, but instead are woven into the teaching of the state’s—and the nation’s—history.

Chaka Cummings was appointed to serve as executive director of the Association, which is housed in the Carter G. Woodson Center for Interracial Education at Berea College.

In addition to Berea, the Association also is collaborating with Kentucky State University, the Muhammad Ali Center and Kentucky History Resources, LLC.

"Our mission is to make sure that the historical experiences and the stories of black Kentucky as past and present, are highlighted as we consider that greater context with regard to social studies education. So same great frameworks that apply to a great history class would apply to Black history," said Cummings.
